Research results overwhelmingly show that active involvement in your child’s education is one of the most important factors in their academic success. It’s more important than your child’s teacher, the quality of the materials and facilities at your child’s school, and even more important than your own education or economic level. Decades of research clearly show that children whose parents are involved in their education:

1. Get better grades and test scores
2. Do more homework
3. Have better attendance
4. Have higher graduation rates
5. Are more likely to go on to college or other postsecondary education
6. Demonstrate a more positive attitude and better behavior all around

I understand that parents are busy, which causes parent involvement to look different in every home. Perhaps you’re not able to attend every parent/teacher conference or the monthly PTA meetings, however you may be able to volunteer for the school bake sale, help organize the school dance, chaperone a field trip, or work the concession stand for a sporting event. I’m sure you can and will think of some meaningful way to show your support and volunteer this year. Yet, if you are unable to go to your child’s school, stay connected with your child’s teacher via email, PowerSchool, Schoology, or the available online communication stem at your child’s school.

One thing that remains constant is that parents who are involved see themselves as partners in their child’s education. With such a powerful partnership supporting them, children do better in school and in life.
